Introduction: Nangi though is a beautiful village, is still a remote village. Though it is connected by a transport, people of Nangi would have a hard time if there was no establishment of wireless network. This multipurpose project was initiated by Maggasassy award winner Mahabir pun with the help of various other individuals and organization. Wireless network was established in 24th July, 2009 with hope of changing lives of people of Nangi, and to many extents this project has been able to meet the expectation of the local people. This project seeks to transform this rural village of Nepal socio economically. People of Nangi have well understood the importance of this network and are already making a good use of it and slowly changing their living style as well as standard. Internet is a free commodity here, so throughout the village Internet has brought socio economic changes.
Wireless internet has brought a great change in the way people communicate to the outside world. They use latest communication tools such as E-mail, video conference and even get involved in the social networking sites such as Facebook. This has helped them to get connected with the outside world, by remaining in their own village. The absence of telephone wires and other communication tools is never felt as people out here have no problem communicating to people of other parts of the world. This would never have been possible if there was no establishment of the wireless network.
Presence of internet has given people of Nangi a boon in the field of education. In the place where books and newspaper are hard to reach, Internet has given them unlimited library of education. People are seen googling and researching about any topic they are confused about and most of students have made the most out of it. Students of Himanchal Madhyamik Vidhyalaya (the only school in Nangi) read e-papers and get enough information about anything they are confused about through internet. A newspaper rarely gets to Nangi, but people here are updated about the outside world through the internet. Internet hence has made a significant change in the field of education and e-learning.
Tele-medicine is another benefit , people of Nangi have received through establishment of wireless Internet. The internet is powerful enough to video conference directly to major hospitals of the city area and help the patient through the local clinic in Nangi. Ambulance and Good Doctors are out of question so this facility has helped them to be checked by good doctors even though they reside in the remote part. Currently Kathmandu Model Hospital situated in Kathmandu, Nepal is helping with this tele-medicine program.
People in Nangi are using Internet for their economic purpose as well. Nangi, village where local products like local juice, Jam, livestock, handicrafts and dairy products are directly traded through the Internet. Internet are also used to book hotels and community lodge directly from other areas. For proper establishment of e-commerce, students of Gandaki engineering college have established a online market called Haatbazaar.com which helps the people of Nangi to trade through internet more easily.
Wireless Network established here has already proven itself a boon for the village. The idea initiated by Mahabir pun has benefited single village of Nangi. This wireless project further plans to expand and provide more facilities to the village of Nangi. Some of these future goals includes starting tele –training program, Establishing virtual ATM service and remittance system , increasing the system back up and increasing the broadband service quality.
